...Lebanon Seeks Support Amid Fragile Ceasefire with Israel
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Paris on Friday for critical discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting comes at a time when tensions between Israel and Hezbollah are rising, putting a fragile truce at risk as Lebanon navigates its path towards stability and economic reform.
In his inaugural visit to a Western country, President Aoun aimed to bolster support from France following the establishment of a new government under Prime Minister Nawaf Salam—an achievement after a prolonged two-year political stalemate.
The fragile ceasefire, orchestrated by France and the United States in November, mandated that Hezbollah withdraw its weapons from southern Lebanon, Israeli ground forces pull back, and the Lebanese army take control of the area. However, accusations of violations have surfaced from all parties involved, heightening the already precarious situation.
The Israeli military confirmed on Friday that it was targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, just hours after missiles were launched from Lebanon into Israeli territory. The situation has raised alarms about a potential escalation in violence.
"It appears essential to advance the full respect for the ceasefire," remarked a French presidential spokesperson ahead of President Aoun's visit. France, alongside the United States, has positioned itself as a guarantor of the ceasefire agreement and remains in ongoing discussions with U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and his deputy, Morgan Ortagus.
Additionally, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will participate in the discussions via video call, allowing for a broader conversation surrounding regional stability and the implications of recent cross-border clashes that resulted in the deaths of ten individuals earlier this month.
As President Aoun engages with European leaders, the world watches closely, hoping for a path toward de-escalation and peace in a region beset by turmoil.
